- What inspired you to commit to hiking once a month for the entire year?
I used to dislike being called “lean,” but now I aspire to achieve that state. As someone in middle age, I’ve gained weight that doesn’t sit well with me. I chose to address this sooner rather than later. I’ve discovered that movement, especially walking, is the most effective way to shed weight. That’s why I found Itchyfeet hikers, and for the past 13 months, I haven’t looked back.
2. Were there any challenges you faced in maintaining this commitment, and how did you overcome them?
In today’s world, everything demands our attention. Opting for minimalism and embracing a simple life begins with purposefully approaching every aspect—sleep, laundry, walking, work, school, and more. Having a full-year calendar available from the start of the year is beneficial. I promptly schedule the hikes I’ve chosen in my diary, and my life revolves around these plans—whether it’s travel, school, time with friends, and so forth. Additionally, I’ve communicated to my closest friends and family that these hikes hold significant importance to me.
3. Can you share a standout moment or favorite hike from this past year?
The pinnacle of every hike, characterized by breathtaking views and invigorating fresh air, held a unique significance in each expedition I undertook. Among them, conquering Elephant Hill stands out as the most challenging endeavor I’ve ever faced. It tested my limits, proving that I could endure altitude sickness, something I once believed to be a mere myth. In the final hour ascending to the summit, I dedicated my energy to encouraging and persuading Noni that we could reach the top—and indeed, we succeeded!
4. Did you discover any unexpected benefits or lessons from your frequent hiking?
I continue to leave the world behind and just walk and enjoy my surroundings. I have met amazing people and had amazing conversations.
5. How did this experience change or impact your perspective on nature and the outdoors?
I have always loved nature and the outdoors. I love nature and the outdoors MORE…. Looking for new “dudus” and plants.
6. How did hiking regularly contribute to your overall well-being and fitness?
The aches and pains I felt after each hike were stark reminders of my lack of fitness. It dawned on me in October that relying solely on the monthly hikes wasn’t sufficient. I made a firm commitment to walk 10,000 steps daily. With this added routine alongside the hikes, the discomfort significantly diminished. Now, I find myself in better health and a happier state of mind.
7. What’s your next hiking goal or adventure for the upcoming year?
Be consistent, do at least another 12 hikes and hopefully all the ones marked ‘difficult’.
8. Any advice or tips for beginners who aim to hike regularly in the upcoming year?
JUST DO IT! Follow Noni’s instructions to the letter! See you on the next hike!
